Sponsor A Smart Combination of 1D and 3D CFD Methods to Address the Impact of Active Grille Shutters on Vehicle Fuel Economy and Underhood Thermal Management 
  • Assessment (through simulation) of Active Grille Shutters (AGS) impact on vehicle aerodynamic drag, hence fuel economy while taking into account underhood thermal management
  • Demonstration of optimal combination of 3D CFD and 1D methods
             - A 3D CFD model of a full vehicle including AGS to determine the vehicle aerodynamic drag and underhood inlet coefficient of pressure as a function of AGS opening position
            - A system model (1D) including underhood thermal management to assess fuel economy over driving cycles and using the previous 3D CFD mapped information for the AGS and heat exchanger air velocity
             - A new methodology called Embedded CFD combining both methods into a single model and showing a very good compromise between model fidelity and fast simulation time suitable for early design stage
